Making Tax Digital for Income Tax: The Taxman Goes Digital

Remember the days when you could promise yourself you'd sort your accounts "next weekend" for six months straight? Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax is here to make that strategy a little more challenging.

Under MTD, many self-employed individuals and landlords will need to keep digital records and submit updates to HMRC throughout the year using compatible software. In other words, your receipts can no longer live exclusively in a biscuit tin, carrier bag or the infamous Shoebox of Doom.

While that might sound like extra work, there is an upside. Keeping records up to date gives you a clearer picture of how your business is performing and helps avoid the annual scramble to remember what happened eleven months ago.

The key is preparation. Choosing suitable software and getting into the habit of recording income and expenses regularly will make the transition much smoother. Think of it like going to the gym: a little effort each week is much easier than trying to do a year's worth of exercise in one weekend.

Making Tax Digital isn't designed to catch people out—it's designed to modernise the tax system. With the right support and tools, most businesses will find the process far less daunting than they first imagined.

And if you're unsure where to start, that's exactly what accountants are for.
