The Shoebox of Doom: Every Accountant's Greatest Fear
Every accountant has seen it. A client walks in carrying the shoebox. It's bulging with crumpled receipts, mystery invoices, takeaway napkins and, somehow, a loyalty card from 2018. "Everything's in there," they say proudly.
Technically, they're right.
While we do enjoy a good puzzle, sorting through a paper avalanche isn't the fastest—or cheapest—way to prepare your accounts. Keeping your records organised throughout the year saves time, reduces stress and makes it much easier to spot expenses you can actually claim.
The good news? You don't need to become a spreadsheet wizard overnight. A simple folder, a cloud accounting app or even snapping photos of receipts as you go can make a huge difference.
Your future self (and your accountant) will thank you when tax season rolls around. Less time hunting for faded receipts means more time focusing on growing your business—or enjoying a well-earned coffee.
So, if your bookkeeping currently lives in a shoebox, consider this your gentle intervention. Your accountant's blood pressure will appreciate it... and your wallet probably will too.
